Have you noticed that most of the articles and blogs out there are about having to fix something? I have to admit, I too have fallen into that frame of thinking from time to time. Today I want to invite you to consider sharing more about all the good things happening in your life.
There are times when I think we feel that in order to be a part of a group, whether family, friends, colleagues and acquaintances, to fit in, we have to find something wrong in our lives. That the only relevant stories to share are our moments of loss, grief, sadness, disappointment etc. Does this resonate?
We are told bragging is bad…
Here’s an interesting twist on holding the belief only bad news gets attention. For years whenever I had good news, I mean really exciting news to share, no one was around. I could never find anyone to share in my joy and excitement. I would call at least 5 people…no one would answer. It was like the universe was telling me no one wants to hear my good news. That translated into a belief that people would only be there if my life was not going well. My conversations and writing became about my struggles with a dash of something good every now and then. I started to look for problems when things were going well.
I believe the story we make up is around our value. Value that our thoughts are only worth sharing and capturing when there is a problem to solve and/or fix. That in order to fit in we should have problems like everyone else. We don’t want people to feel less than, and don’t want others to think we are bragging. Could this be because when we hear someone sharing their good news we have judgements about it…we compare where we are in our life and might feel less than? So we assume others are doing the same?
This is a natural reaction, we can’t help compare ourselves to others. And because we don’t want to make someone else feel bad by boasting about our good fortune we tone it down. Yes, we can talk about the promotion…only if we downplay it, we bite our tongues when good fortune smiles on us, worse yet, make it seem trivial. We are taught not to brag, or to make a big deal of our great events, unless others are also experiencing wonderful things.
We can change things around…
This deeply held belief has results…you see the universe, energy, whatever you want to call it knows just one thing…where your attention is. If over time you keep downplaying all the good things, all of a sudden all the not so good things begin to happen more frequently. And we don’t understand why… I know this from personal experience.
Sooo my invitation…which may take you out of your comfort zone, and challenge the deeply held beliefs running like undercurrents within you is… Share your exciting news, brag, boast, and own how SPECTACULAR you are! Breathe into all the uncomfortableness…maybe we’ll start a new trend…to share the truth of our experiences, whatever they may be at any given moment in time.
Until the next time!
